Shiny factory doors keep paint only when a purpose-made bonding primer goes on first and the surface itself is still firmly attached. Cabinet painting does well on solid melamine and firmly bonded thermofoil, but a vinyl skin that is already lifting is past saving with a coating.
In East Credit these doors turn up in the later Heartland homes built into the 2000s, in condo townhouse kitchens near Britannia Road, and in basement kitchens and laundry rooms added after the house was built. Many are white thermofoil in a shaker or cathedral profile.
Melamine is a thin decorative paper, soaked in resin and pressed onto particleboard. After a proper scuff it accepts bonding primer without trouble. Its soft spot is the thin edge tape, which flakes away and leaves raw particleboard showing, so those edges are patched and sealed first.
Plastic laminate is harder still and is handled the same way. Its shine has to be knocked down with a thorough scuff, since bonding primer holds on to a dulled face much more firmly than a glossy one.
Thermofoil is a vinyl sheet vacuum-pressed onto routed MDF. As long as that sheet is stuck down everywhere, cabinet painting holds. When it starts to let go, fresh paint simply sits on a loose skin and the lifting carries on beneath it.
Dishwasher steam and oven heat soften the adhesive under the vinyl. So the first doors we inspect are the ones flanking the dishwasher and the ones above the stove.
It usually begins with one curled corner or a small blister along an edge, and before long the face peels away in one piece. At that point there are two paths. One is warming the vinyl until it releases, prime the bare MDF and paint it, which is slow and worth it only on a handful of doors. The other is fitting a replacement door and spraying it with the rest of the kitchen. Replacement doors are explained under cabinet refacing and door replacement.
Across a whole kitchen, bonding primer for slick doors typically adds $150 to $400, because it is an added product and an added pass. Patching chipped melamine edges nudges it up slightly.
Bonding primer also needs patience. You can topcoat it after a few hours, but its full grip keeps building for three or four days, so the kitchen can look finished while the doors still want gentle hands.
Leaving out bonding primer is the number one cause of a painted melamine kitchen peeling inside a year. Standard primer cannot bite into a factory face, and topcoat cannot fix that later.
Many townhouse kitchens near Heartland have white thermofoil doors in a shaker or cathedral profile that are still tight. Cabinet painting can change that white to greige, sage or a deeper colour once the bonding primer is on.
The doors nearest the dishwasher and the oven are the ones most at risk later. Fitting a heat shield strip at the dishwasher after cabinet painting helps protect those doors, and we can add one to the quote.
Melamine kitchens in townhouses and rental units are usually sound but dated. Replacing them rarely makes sense, and cabinet painting a small melamine kitchen is near the bottom of our pricing.
